to a problematic window A private residence, a 1932 Hilo modified craftsman which had undergone significant remodeling over its 75-year life, is being restored by the current owners. The downstairs bath window looks out on a service porch with views of a portion of the garden and the utilities. This means the meter reader and other service personnel also have a view in. The window also is hidden from the street, providing burglars possible access to the home. The wall is in a shady area, so ventilation and light were a concern. Leilehua designed a stainless steel screen which incorporated the tropical landscape plants visible from the window. The screen allows in filtered light, provides a sense of the out-doors, and would be painful and time-consuming to remove from the outside. |

security screen for kitchen door A private residence, a 1932 Hilo craftsman in the Halai Hill area. The owners wanted a security screen which did not look like security. The yard is being landscaped with a focus on native Hawaiian and kanu plants. The kitchen garden includes bananas, taro, herbs, and sweet potatoes. The owners, native Hawaiians, wanted a design which would honor their heritage, and also be symbolic of their relationship. Mai`a, banana, is symbolic of the male. `Uala, sweet potato, is symbolic of the female. Both were brought as kanu plants by the ancestors of modern Hawaiians. Here, the mai`a stands protectively with the `uala, which lovingly embraces him with her vines. Stainless steel. |
