Laua`e Leilehua was inspired by her work in crafting traditional lei from laua`e, and introduced fern related to the endemic pe`a. |
In a workshop at the Pähala Plantation House, Leilehua teaches her students to craft the lei laua`e. Laua`e is also known as maile-scented fern. Related to the endemic pe`a (called laua`e on the island of Kauai), laua`e was introduced in the late 1800s. It's fragrance and pliability soon made it a popular material for lei. |
