Renowned in ancient legend and honored in chant, song, and hula, the `ohe
was one of the plants brought to Hawai`i by the early Polynesian settlers.
One legend tells that `ohe originally was flat-stemmed and knife-edged. The
demigod Maui, when a baby, cut his hand playing with the sharp stems. His
grandmother turned the edges in and made the bamboo stems grow round so that
he would not be cut again. Since then, all bamboo grows with round stems,
but when the stems are split, they reveal their knife-like edges.
